I have a new MacBook Pro, and all the Jam Packs, including the now discontinued Jam Pack 1. I've done a clean install of the Mac OS X 10.6 (DVD), and updates, and the Applications (DVD), and updates. But when I try to install the Jam Pack 1, it gives a strange popup window at the end of the installation: 'Alert title Alert' Something happened.' Following this, I can't update the Jam Pack to the 1.0.1 version, as I've done in the past (installer indicates that I don't have this Jam Pack installed).

Is this Jam Pack not needed anymore (or perhaps the loops and instruments are already included with iLife 09)? But then why does it copy so many files to the disk? Any help would be appreciated. There is also a receipt listed in the Installed Software of the Software Update utility (although it does not list a version number). However, it will not update to version 1.0.1 using the Software Update utility, or even if I manually use the package file for the update. When I try to update manually, the program that checks your computer indicates that 'GarageBand Jam Pack Update can't be installed on this computer.

This update requires GarageBand Jam Pack to be installed.' Seems like a bug to me.

Aug 19, 2010 8:40 PM. There are loops being installed when I install the Jam Packs (I can see each set in GarageBand), but I still get a strange message for each. I just installed the 2nd Pack, and see the same 'something happened' message. I have now gone ahead and installed the Jam Packs up to set # 4. All of these installations give me the 'Something happened' warning, but only on the first disk of the installation disks (some sets have 1 disk, and others have 2). Jam Pack 4 also has an update to version 1.0.1, but my Software Update did not recognize that I needed it.

Downloading the update manually and applying it worked for this set, as opposed to set #1 which would not. So I'm still thinking that there is some issue with 10.6 that is preventing a 'clean' install of the Jam Packs.

There appears to be something crashing in PackageBuddy: So I think there is a bug somewhere in the installer(s) of the Jam Packs. There is a bug/incompatibility between PackageBuddy (which enables the PPC installer from older Jampacks to work on newer intel macs) and the latest OS. Since Snow Leopard downloads PackageBuddy from Apple as needed, this is something Apple could and should fix.

PackageBuddy installed with Leopard (using GB '09) worked just fine. PackageBuddy downloaded with Snow Leopard (using GB '09) runs into this problem.

(Snow Leopard doesn't automatically instal PackageBuddy; it retrieves it online if needed). So it appears the problem is with PackageBuddy, Snow Leopard, and older Jampacks. Jampacks produced with the PPC installer are having problems installing into Snow Leopard. Please complain to Apple feedback so they know! PackageBuddy is supposed to translate from PowerPC to intel, but is broken. A PackageBuddy update should fix it. Aug 25, 2010 7:55 AM.
